It was a slightly dull January day earlier this year when I got an email from Annie (wedding planner extraordinaire) that put a big big smile on my face inviting me to travel to Valentia Island to be a Valentia Island wedding photographer – off the coast of County Kerry, Ireland, to cover a London couple’s destination wedding.
Eight months later on I jumped on a plane to Cork, drove for a few hours and ended up on the stunning Irish Atlantic coast. True to form it was overcast and drizzly- but I actually loved the atmosphere it created. It was such a brilliant setting for a wedding and for great wedding photography.
But the real reason I absolutely loved this wedding was the bride and groom – Dee and Zarius – and their fantastic family and friends. The people make a wedding and I couldn’t have worked with nicer, more welcoming people who embraced me as part of them and made sure I had an awesome time. It made being a destination wedding photographer on Valentia Island easy.
Dee, now living in London, but returning to where she grew up got ready on the island’s main hotel – the Royal Valentia Hotel – where they would later return to for their wedding reception. Their was a brilliant buzz and expectancy as the girls went through their preparations. Zarius, South African now in London, was on site too so it was great to be able to pop over and spend some time with him and the guys.
The ceremony was held at the beautiful St John The Baptist Church just a short walk from the hotel. Full of emotion, love and celebration – it was a really lovely service and so reflective of Dee and Zarius as people. Celebrations followed back at the Royal Valentia Hotel – and despite the weather we managed to grab a quick 5 minute gap in the rain to pop out for some portraits by the sea. The speeches were all wonderfully delivered , leaving no dry eye in the house. And true to Irish tradition the party continued well into the early hours.
It was such a pleasure to get to know Dee and Zarius – truly awesome people and so happy and in love. Perfect for each other. I’m really thankful I got to travel to Ireland and document their special day. Thanks guys! I hope you were pleased with your Valentia Island Wedding Photography.
